Warning: Large amounts should be avoided in pregnancy. Cloves can be irritating to the GI tract, and should be avoided by people with gastric ulcers, colitis, or IBS. In overdoses, cloves can cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and upper GI hemorrhage. Severe cases can lead to changes in liver function, dyspnea, loss of consciousness, hallucination, and even death. The internal use of the essential oil should be restricted to 3 drops per day for an adult as excessive use can cause severe kidney damage. Do not use Clove in herbal teas if one is prone to constipation.

Cloves are used as a carminative, to increase hydrochloric acid in the stomach and to improve
peristalsis. Cloves are also said to be a natural anthelmintic; bronchial troubles; decayed teeth strong germicide, a powerful antiseptic;

---Constituents---
Volatile Oil; Gallotannic Acid; Two Crystalline Principles – Caryophyllin, which is odorless and appears to be a phytosterol; Eugenin; Gum; resin; fiber.

---Medicinal Action and Uses---
Cloves are used in Ayurveda, Chinese medicine and western herbalism even dentistry. The essential oil is uses as a anodyne for dental emergencies When given in powder or infusion for nausea emesis, flatulence, languid indigestion and dyspepsia cloves are very affect, given topical over the stomach region it will warm the digestive problems, and used chiefly to assist or be a catalysts for action of other medicines. Infusion and Clove water are good vehicles for alkalies and aromatics.

Recipe: Clove Gargle or Clove Mouth Rinse – 1 pint (inexpensive) sherry, 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) bruised cloves, ½ ounce (1 tablespoon) bruised cinnamon pinch of bruised caraway seeds, Lavender water to be used later; Steep the spices and seeds in the sherry. Keep the mixture in a dark closet or box. Shake it as often as you can.  After a week or two strain out the herbs. Add a few drops of lavender water or lotion to the gargle for aroma.  To use the gargle for sore throat, add about a teaspoon to a tablespoon of the wine to a glass of water. 

     
Recipe: Sleep Aid – Cloves Oil can be released by bruising and steeping eh cloves in oiling water, and the simmering them for a few minutes.  When simmering, do not allow the water to be reduced too much. A teaspoon to a cup of boiling water will produce a mild and slightly sedative tea.  Add Chamomile, linden, or sage.  This tea can also be used as a temporary toothache aid. 

     
Recipe: Depression – Clove tea couple with Chamomile, linden or peppermint can often help lift mild depressions. 

     
Recipe: Finger Cut – An ordinary cut, like a paper cut, can be extremely painful.  Wet your finger, and dip it into powdered cloves. 

     
Recipe: Detoxification – Basil and Cloves; Use powdered cloves and sweet basil, combine equal amounts (1 ounce at a time) of powdered into #00 capsules.  Use a 2-capsule dosage three times a day until Metals are expelled from the body. 

     
Recipe: Nervousness – Clove; Add bruised cloves to any tea to relieve nervous irritability. 

     
Recipe: Sleep – Linden, chamomile, sage, catnip, clove and skullcap teas are all sedative.  These can be mixed together according to choice, or may be used separately with or without honey.  Honey absorbs water; it can be useful in holding moisture with the body. 

     
Recipe: Extract Distillation of Cloves – 1 tablespoon cloves, 1 ½ cups water; Boil until it is a syrup.  Repeat three times.  This is useful in tiny doses and on rare occasions, for sleep problems.  Use a teaspoon of the distillation in a cup of hot herbal chamomile or linden tea.  The stronger the distillation, the more sedative and sleep-producing it becomes.
