Ø General description
Gymnema
combination is an appetite suppressant formula. The herbs work to reduce appetite,
compete for carbohydrate absorption sites in the digestive tract and provide a sensation of fullness.
Chinese
herbalists would describe this herbal combination as an earth reducing formula. It
also reduces the fire element while enhancing the wood, water and metal elements.
Gymnema
combination has traditionally been used to treat obesity and diabetes.
This
formula is commonly used in conjunction with Chickweed, Yellow dock, and Golden seal leaf.

∞ Individual Components
---Gymnema
leaf--- contains bitter compounds that compete for carbohydrate absorption
sites in the digestive tract. This reduces the effective caloric value of ingested
carbohydrates. Gymnema has been used to treat obesity and diabetes.
---Brindleberry---
contains bitter compounds that reduce one’s appetite for food. The method by which this is accomplished is as yet undetermined. Brindleberry is an excellent herbal source of vitamin C and beta carotene.
It has been used to treat obesity, dysuria and diabetes.
---Psyllium hulls--- is used as a diuretic, treat
bloody urine, coughing and high blood pressure, a bulk laxative, peristaltic activity in the bowel, candida infections and
chronic yeast infections.
---Marshmallow root--- Aids the body in expelling excess fluid and mucus. Soothes
and heals skin, mucous membranes, and other tissues, externally and internally. Good
for bladder infection, digestive upsets, fluid retention, headache, intestinal disorders, kidney problems, sinusitis, and
sore throat.
---Chickweed--- contains mucilaginous compounds that absorb toxins from
the bowel, soothe inflamed tissues, give bulk to the stool and increase the flow of urine.
These compounds also decrease the thickness while increasing the production of mucosal fluids. Chickweed has been used to treat rheumatism, arthritis, inflammatory skin conditions and obesity.
---Yellow dock--- contains bitter compounds that are laxative, increase
the production of digestive fluids and enzymes, especially bile, and increase the flow of urine. It also contains astringent compounds that shrink inflamed tissues.
Yellow dock is an excellent herbal source of vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and selenium. It has been used to treat liver congestion, constipation, arthritis, rheumatism, inflammatory
bowel disorders and inflammatory skin conditions.
---Golden seal leaf--- contains,
bitter, astringent alkaloids that normalize liver and spleen functions by increasing the production of digestive fluids and
enzymes, particularly bile. The compounds are antiseptic, constrict peripheral blood vessels, especially in the uterus, are
laxative and relieve pain and inflammation in mucosal tissue. Golden seal leaf
is an excellent herbal source of trace minerals including cobalt, iron, magnesium, manganese, silicon and zinc. It is also an excellent herbal source of vitamin C. It has
been used to treat hepatitis, gastritis, colitis, ulcers, menorrhagia, postpartum hemorrhages, dysmenorrhea, diabetes, infections,
hemorrhoids, eczema, obesity and fevers.
