Today
we will talk about feeling pain from the “outside coming in”. WELL… that is what it means to
be an empath on the receiving end. No more, no less! What to do is quite simple, but can be difficult to remember
in the heat of the moment. Here are some things you can do that will be helpful.
1.Create a pink bubble around yourself and feel unconditional
love. (Sometimes
a lot easier said than done)
2. Create
a pink bubble around the pain to protect yourself, say "No thanks!”.
3.Send Reiki to the pain, and release the energy from it to be recycled by the universe.
4.Now here what’s work for me personally:
a.Acknowledge the pain.
b.Find out where it is coming from.This can be overwhelming
when you're out in public (at
Wal-Mart, etc).
c.Ask mentally or out loud if you can be of assistance. Wait for the “yes” or “no”
and respect that.
i.If you get no answer, follow your gut instincts.
ii.If you get a yes then Reiki the person, animal, or plant.
iii.If you get a no focus on unconditional love, and bless this person, animal, or
plant and release them (cut the cord).
d.Now Reiki yourself and release all pain. It really
is very quick, because it is no more than
a 1, 2, 3 thought.
5.Be aware, it just might be mixed up with your own pain, and this is why it is very important to Reiki yourself
as well.It can be very difficult to determine what pain is coming from outside and what pain is coming from
inside. Even though the pain feels as if it is coming from outside, it doesn’t always mean it is coming from
something or someone else. We store our pain and past thoughts in our “Auric field”. Sometimes something
or someone may trigger it. Then we will receive it and have to deal with the thought that was stored in the aura.
6.Just remember the rule of thought – Keep it simple... It is far too easy to take on everybody else's
thoughts of pain and loss as "our own”, because for empaths it often does feel so much like our own. Taking on
the painful thoughts of loved ones can become all consuming, because due to the entwined nature of our relationship,
it often feels as if the pain is our own. Remember the cup is half full, so step up to the pump and fill it up!
Reiki on!
7.In today's world, people do not take responsibility
for they're thoughts, because after all their just thoughts!How can that harm anyone? Well they can, if
we allow them to, and most people do. Just say “Thank you for sharing, but no thanks". You have
to be firm, because so many people do not respect each other or anything else. Remember the key word is “allowed”.
Yes, you are giving yourself permission when you allow yourself to be hurt by their thoughts! And yes, you may become
angry or hurt by their thoughts. So now, who is in the wrong for being angry? Who now has taken responsibility
for someone else’s thoughts? I am usually willing to help them heal themselves, depending of course on the
person and the thoughts that are coming from that person, but I will not let their thoughts bring harm or pain to me, (there
are a lot of bad people out there). 8.Yes, I know there are people who believe their thoughts
have no impact on others, because after all no “physical” action was taken.Bet let me tell
you that as an empath I know that thoughts can cause pain, harm, and even death.I also know that there
are a lot of good people out there who just need to be open to understanding that “thoughts are things”
and this would stop.I have the utmost respect for the individual that understands this and takes responsibility
for how their thoughts can affect others!I take my hat off to those respectful individuals! Think about it, what is Reiki? It is “thoughts” of energy being moved into healing!This is taking responsibility for one’s own thoughts.It is also these same respectful individuals
that send Prayers, Energy, Positive Thoughts, Hope, or even crosses their fingers, etc. for the benefit of others.
9.As individual
we have the power to literally think our way into whatever we need to do.Yes, “We” have to
give the body “building blocks” for healing sickness, injuries and pain. But without “thought” behind
the action there is no way the body is going to follow. This is also true for the “intellectual thought; it also must
have the action (of the body) to back it up!
10.“We” also have to give freely to our
own “Mind”, “Body”, the “Intellectual thought” and the Body “Building Blocks”
to heal and restore balanced (wholeness) within ourselves. I hope you find this helpful,

Second Edition; People do not chew seed and nut long enough or well enough for proper digestion and assimilation and this
is why people should make Seed and Nut Butters. Here is how he would do a few of them —
To make the
seed and nut butters simply by putting them through a Champion Juicer, available at many health and natural food stores.
Sesame Seed Milk – ¼ cup sesame seeds to 2 cups of water, raw milk or goat
milk. Place in blender and blend 1-1/2 minutes. Strain through fine wire strainer or 2-4 layers of cheesecloth.
This is to remove the hulls. Add 1 tablespoon carob powder and 6-8 dates. For flavor and added nutritional value,
any one of the following may be added to this drink: banana, stewed raisins, apple or cherry concentrate, date powder or grape
sugar. Your own imagination or taste may dictate other combinations of fruits or juices. Whenever adding anything,
run in blender again to mix. This milk may also be used as the basis for salad dressings.
Dr. Jensen believes
that sesame seed milk is one of our best drinks. It is a wonderful drink for gaining weight, for lubricating the intestinal
tract, and its nutritional value is beyond compare, as it is high in protein and minerals. This is the seed used in
the making of Tahini, a sesame seed oil dressing.Other uses for sesame seeds: Salad dressing, added to vegetable broth, added
to fruits, mixed with nut butter of any kind, for after-school snacks; use on cereals for breakfast, add to whey drinks to
adjust intestinal sluggishness, twice daily with banana to gain weight; add supplements such as flaxseed meal or rice polishing.
Almond Nut Milk – Use blanched or unblanched almonds. Other nuts may be
used also. Soak nuts overnight in apple or pineapple juice or honey water. This softens the nut meats. Then
put 3 ounces of soaked nuts in 5 ounces of water and blend for 2 to 2 ½ minutes in the liquefier. Flavor with honey,
any kind of fruit, concentrates of apple or cherry juices, strawberry juice, carob powder, dates or bananas,. This can
also be used with any of the vegetable juices.
Almond nut milk can be used with soups and vegetarian roasts as
a flavoring. Use over cereals, too. Almond milk makes a very alkaline drink, high in protein, easy to assimilate.
Pumpkin Seed or Sunflower Seed Milk — The same principle as is used for making nut
milks can be employed to make sunflower seed milk; i.e., soaking overnight, liquefying and flavoring with fruits and juices.
Use in the diet the same way as the almond nut milk. It is best to use whole sunflower seeds and blend them yourself.
However, if you do not have a Liquefier, the sunflower seed meal can be used. Add seeds or nuts. NO Peanuts!
Soy Milk – Soy milk powder is found universally in health food stores.
Add 4
tablespoons soy milk powder to one pint of water. Sweeten with raw sugar, honey or molasses, and add a pinch of vegetable
salt. For flavor, you can add any kind of fruit, apple or cherry concentrate, carob powder, dates and bananas. You can
add any other natural sweetener.
Keep in refrigerator. Use this milk in any recipe as you would regular cow’s
milk. It closely resembles the taste and composition of cow’s milk and will sour just as quickly.
Therefore,
it should not be made in too large quantities or too far ahead of time.
When I was
young, a friend of mine had an uncle who had Parkinson’s disease. You could tell he had once been a tall, vital man,
but by the time my friend and I were old enough to notice such things, he had been pretty much incapacitated by the disease.
I remember how Uncle Harry’s
hands would shake uncontrollably. Once he was standing up he would need a cane to help him maintain balance and he would shuffle
his feet. His wife Amanda, who thankfully was a big woman, spent many years helping him get in and out of chairs, in and out
of bed and move around the house.
Uncle Harry had what I thought were "dents" in his forehead. As I learned years later those spots marked the
areas where doctors had drilled through his skull and burned small areas of the brain with an electrode, hoping to alleviate
some of the symptoms associated with Parkinson’s. The surgeries were apparently not very successful.
These recollections of Uncle Harry are from the
1950s and early ‘60s and scientists are still trying to find a cure for this debilitating disease. One bright spot is
a new study from Finland. Researchers have found that high blood levels of vitamin D might reduce the risk of developing Parkinson’s
by 67%. See my first report below to learn more about this exciting study.
In other news, researchers writing in the Journal
of the American College of Cardiology discovered that cocoa flavonols may mobilize important cells that could
repair damaged blood vessels. The study showed a 47% improvement in blood vessel function with a high intake of cocoa flavonols.

Rounding things up today, researchers in Japan have found a connection between the compounds found in black
tea and a reduction in allergic response in people with sensitive skin. Turn to report number three to find out more.
Approximately 2.1 million Americans are affected by rheumatoid arthritis. Most of those people
are women. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) states that rheumatoid arthritis is about two to three times more common
in women than in men.
The Mayo Clinic describes rheumatoid arthritis as "a chronic inflammatory disorder that most typically
affects the small joints in your hands and feet. Unlike the wear-and-tear damage of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects
the lining of our joints, causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity."
"Rheumatoid
arthritis occurs," the Mayo Clinic states, "when your immune system mistakenly attacks your own body’s tissues.
In addition to causing joint problems, rheumatoid arthritis can also affect your whole body with fevers and fatigue.
"That
brings me to a study published recently in the European
Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers in Taiwan have found that taking vitamin B-6 on a daily basis helps
reduce levels of inflammatory compounds found in people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. See my first report for details
of the study.
In other news… As many women have found out, pregnancy is often accompanied by diabetes. In fact, it’s
called gestational diabetes. Diabetes.org reports that "Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have
high blood sugar (glucose) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes." About 135,000 cases of gestational
diabetes in the United States are reported each year.
Today, scientists have discovered that probiotics can be helpful in reducing the risk of diabetes
in mothers. Researchers in Finland say the probiotics may also become a tool in addressing obesity in children. See my second
report to learn more.
Finally, there is more news about the benefits of vitamin E and vitamin D. Scientists have found that
consuming more vitamin E may reduce the risk of developing dementia and maintaining healthy levels of vitamin D may slow cognitive
decline. Check out my third report below.
It’s been several years now since reports about the importance of antioxidants hit the
nationwide newscasts. Since then, study after study has shown how crucial antioxidant activity is to healthy living.
Why are antioxidants
so important? Because they counter free radicals—highly unstable molecules that can damage cells. Free radicals are
formed during oxidation, one of the body’s natural processes.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) states: "For example, free radicals are produced
when the body breaks down foods for use or storage. They are also produced when the body is exposed to tobacco smoke, radiation
and environmental contaminants. Free radicals can cause damage, known as ‘oxidative stress,’ which is thought
to play a role in the development of many diseases. In laboratory experiments, antioxidant molecules counter oxidative stress
and its associated damage.
"The NIH continues: "The body can produce its own antioxidants and also obtain them from
food. Antioxidants are abundant in vegetables and fruits and are also found in grain cereals, teas, legumes and nuts. Examples
of antioxidants include anthocyanins, beta-carotene, catechins, flavonoids, lipoic acid, lutein, lycopene, selenium and vitamins
C and E. Many antioxidants are also available as dietary supplements.
"That short review of free radicals and antioxidants brings
me to another study involving antioxidants. Researchers have found that antioxidant supplementation over the long run appears
to promote heart health and may beneficially affect sugar and fat metabolism. See my first report today for more information
on this current study.
In other news, scientists analyzed blood samples from about 1,300 people in Amsterdam and found that low
levels of vitamin D in the body may increase the risk of metabolic syndrome in the elderly population. The study was presented
at the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting. See my second report for the details.
Feeling tired? A new study published in Nutrition states: "Ingesting a low dose (approximately 2.3 g/d) of creatine
for six weeks significantly increased plasma creatine concentration and enhanced resistance to fatigue during repeated bouts
of high-intensity contractions." Check out my last report today and perk up.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy are both diseases that can lead to blindness. While
AMD usually affects the elderly, diabetic retinopathy can affect people of many ages.
The National Institutes of Health
(NIH) says AMD "is an eye disease that affects the macula, a part of the retina. The retina sends light from the eye
to the brain, and the macula allows you to see fine detail. AMD blurs the sharp central vision you need for straight-ahead
activities such as reading, sewing and driving."
"In some cases," the NIH says, "AMD advances so slowly
that people notice little change in their vision. In others, the disease progresses faster and may lead to a loss of vision
in both eyes. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in Americans 60 years and older.
"On the other
hand, "diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes and a leading cause of blindness," according to the NIH.
"It occurs when diabetes damages the tiny blood vessels inside the retina in the back of the eye. If you have diabetic
retinopathy, at first you may notice no changes to your vision. But over time, diabetic retinopathy can get worse and cause
vision loss. Diabetic retinopathy usually affects both eyes.
"That leads me to my first report today. Researchers from St. Louis have
found that resveratrol, the now-famous compound found in wine and other foods, may cut the risk of developing AMD and diabetic
retinopathy. Read on to find out more about this stimulating study.

Lastly,
researchers have discovered that omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids found in sea buckthorn may be useful in supporting those

13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing,
also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

A friend of mind shared with me her recipe for adding favorite to the wonderful cucumber -
1 lemon (juiced) 1 Tablespoon of Flax seed oil 1 Tablespoon of Honey Minced Garlic to taste
Basil, Fennel, and Roasted Red Bell Pepper Pesto yields about 2 cups
2 cups basil leaves, loosely packed 1/4 cup virgin olive oil 1/8 cup whole toasted almonds 1 1/2
cups fresh spinach leaves, loosely packed 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 Tablespoons olive oil 1 cup fennel root,
diced 1 medium red bell pepper, roasted, diced salt and black pepper
Place the first five ingredients in a food processor and
puree. Sauté the fennel root in the tablespoon of olive oil until slightly golden. Cool and add to the processor. Puree
again.
Transfer
puree to a bowl and stir in the red bell pepper. Add salt and pepper to taste.
This is savory treat when spread on focaccia or bruschetta, either by itself or
with the addition of creamy goat cheese. Or try it as a quick and satisfying starter when tossed with hot pasta.

Ann’s Parkinson’s disease has
become one of the most common ailments in North America. According to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association,
more than two million Americans currently suffer from the disease. In Europe, it’s estimated that four million people
will have the disease by the year 2050.
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) reports: “Parkinson’s disease
(PD) belongs to a group of conditions called motor system disorders, which are the result of the loss of dopamine-producing
brain cells. The four primary symptoms of PD are tremor, or trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw and face; rigidity, or stiffness
of the limbs and trunk; bradykinesia, or slowness of movement; and postural instability, or impaired balance and coordination.
As these symptoms become more pronounced, patients may have difficulty walking, talking, or completing other simple tasks."
The Parkinson Study Group
(PSG) adds: "Although the illness most often affects older individuals, particularly those over the age of 55, Parkinson’s
disease may also affect people in their 30s and 40s. PD appears to be slightly more common in men than in women."
Now a new study shows that
vitamin B-6 deficiency may play a role in the development of the disease. The study, coming out of Japan, was published in
the British Journal of Nutrition.
However, the Japanese study is not the first
to link vitamin B-6 intake and the risk of Parkinson’s disease. In 2006 researchers from the Erasmus Medical Center
in Rotterdam reported that people who had daily vitamin B-6 intakes of 230.9 mcg or more had a 54% lower associated risk of
developing Parkinson’s disease than people who had average daily intakes lower than 185.1 mcg. The study involved 5,289
people over the age of 55.
In other news, scientists in Switzerland report that the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) found in green tea extracts
helps increase fat oxidation in the body and supports healthy weight loss. Turn to my second report for all the facts.
Lastly, a study published
in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds
that the intake of zinc gluconate may help reduce anger and depression in young women. Check out my third report to find out
what they’re talking about.
SWEET POISON...A MUST READ! In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick. She had stomach spasms and she was having a hard time
getting around. Walking was a major chore. It took everything she had just to get out of bed; she was in so much pain.
By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue and muscle biopsies and was on 24 various prescription medications.
The doctors could not determine what was wrong with her. She was in so much pain, and so sick she
just knew she was dying. She put her house, bank accounts, life insurance, etc., in her oldest
daughter's name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of.
She also wanted her
last hooray, so she planned a trip to Florida (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22nd.
On March 19, I
called her to ask how her most recent tests went, and she said they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe
she had MS.
I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she
drank diet soda? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one
open that moment.
I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet soda! I e-mailed her
an article my friend, a lawyer, had sent. My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and
told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk! The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't
feel 100% but, she sure felt a lot better. She told me she was going to her doctor with this
article and would call me when she got home.
Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed! He
is going to call all of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial sweeteners of any kind. In
a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet soda... and literally dying a slow and miserable death.
When she got to Florida March 22, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning!
She is well on her way to a complete recovery. And she is walking! No wheelchair! This article
saved her life.
If it says 'SUGAR FREE' on the label; DO
NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!
I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD
ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on 'ASPARTAME,' marketed as 'NutraSweet,' 'Equal,' and 'Spoonful.'
In the keynote address by the EPA, it was announced that in the United States in 2001 there is an epidemic
of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. It was difficult to determine exactly what toxin was causing this to be rampant.
I stood up and said that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.
I will
explain why Aspartame is so dangerous: When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol
in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the
poison found in the sting of fire ants. The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis
and systemic lupus. Many people were being diagnosed in error. Although multiple
sclerosis is not a death sentence, Methanol toxicity is!
Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple
sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers.
The victim usually does not
know that the Aspartame is the culprit. He or she continues its use; irritating the lupus to such a degree that
it may become a life-threatening condition. We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off diet
sodas.
In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, most of the symptoms disappear. We've seen
many cases where vision loss re turned and hearing loss improved markedly.
This also applies
to cases of tinnitus and fibromyalgia. During a lecture, I said, 'If you are using ASPARTAME ("Nutra Sweet,
Equal, Spoonful, etc) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting, pains, numbness in your legs, Cramps,
Vertigo,Dizziness,Headaches,Tinnitus,Joint pain,Unexplainable
depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!' People
were jumping up during the lecture saying,'I have some of these symptoms. Is it reversible?'
Yes! Yes! Yes!
STOP drinking diet sodas and be alert for
Aspartame on food labels! Many products are fortified with it! This is a serious problem. Dr. Espart
(one of my speakers) remarked that so many people seem to be symptomatic for MS and during his recent visit to a hospice;
a nurse stated that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond
coincidence!
Diet soda is NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM (salt)
and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave carbohydrates.
It is far more likely to make
you GAIN weight! These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and
thighs. Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin and is used primarily to preserve 'tissue specimens.' Many
products we use every day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body! Dr. H. J. Roberts stated in his lectures
that once free of the' diet products' and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an average of
19 pounds over a trial period.
Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics. We found that
some physicians, who believed that they had a patient with retinopathy, in fact, had symptoms caused by Aspartame. The
Aspartame drives the blood sugar out of control. Thus diabetics may suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that
aspartic acid and phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good balance.
Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE. Especially with diabetics, the Aspartame passes the blood/brain
barrier and it then deteriorates the neurons of the brain; causing various levels of brain damage, Seizures, Depression,Manic depression,Panic
attacks, Uncontrollable anger and rage.
Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms
in non-diabetics as well. Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD
have had complete turnarounds in their behavior when these chemicals have been removed from their diet. So called 'behavior modification prescription drugs' (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed. Truth
be told, they were never NEEDED in the first place!
Most of these children were being 'poisoned'
on a daily basis with the very foods that were 'better for them than sugar.'
It is also suspected
that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of diet Coke and diet Pepsi consumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf
War, may be partially to blame for the well-known Gulf War Syndrome.
Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause
birth defects, i..e. mental retardation, if taken at the time of conception and during early pregnancy. Children
are especially at risk for neurological disorders and should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners.
There
are many different case histories to relate of children suffering grand mal seizures and other neurological disturbances talking
about a plague of neurological diseases directly caused by the use of this deadly poison.'
Herein lies the
problem: There were Congressional Hearings when Aspartame was included in 100 different products and strong objection
was made concerning its use. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings, and still nothing has been
done. The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets.
Sadly, MONSANTO'S patent on Aspartame
has EXPIRED! There are now over 5,000 products on the market that contain this deadly chemical and there will
be thousands more introduced. Everybody wants a’ piece of the Aspartame pie.' I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is.
And isn't it ironic that
MONSANTO funds, among others, the American Diabetes Association, the American Dietetic Association and the Conference of the
American College of Physicians?
This has been recently exposed in the New York Times. These [organizations]
cannot criticize any additives or convey their link to MONSANTO because they take money from the food industry and are required
to endorse their products.
Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote and presented a bill that would require label
warnings on products containing Aspartame, especially regarding pregnant women, children and infants.10pt"> The bill would also institute independent studies on the known dangers and the problems existing in the general
population regarding seizures, changes in brain chemistry, neurological changes and behavioral symptoms.
The
bill was killed.
It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for this, letting

The back-to-back, double whammy announcements that PepsiCo (PEP) is ditching high fructose corn
syrup in Gatorade along with the results of a scathing new study from researchers at Princeton make it official — allies
of the controversial sweetener have lost the war. For years, the Corn Refiners Association, a trade group consisting
of companies like Cargill and ADM (ADM), has been hammering away at the bad press gushing out about high fructose corn syrup.
In ads, in the press and online, they argue that the sweetener is a perfectly natural product and that it is no worse for
you than regular old sugar.
To which consumers have responded with a collective
“Yeah, right.” Con Agra (CAG) is taking HFCS out of its Hunt’s ketchup, Kraft (KFT) is banishing it from
Wheat Thins and you will no longer find it in Snapple drinks. It’s all in response to what food companies say is overwhelming
consumer demand. “We know moms don’t like it, and they don’t want to feed it to their kids,” supermarket
expert Phil Lempert told Ad Age. Last month, outraged San Francisco parents forced high fructose corn syrup out of chocolate
milk in the school system. More products are sure to follow.
Rightly
or wrongly, HFCS is deeply entrenched as the most popular symbol of the growing consumer distrust of a food system that churns
out nutritionally empty, overprocessed foods with a long list of strange, unpronounceable ingredients.
And now the Princeton study gives HFCS foes the scientific bombshell they’ve been looking for,
since actual evidence that eating lots of HFCS is going makes you fatter and unhealthier than simply eating lots of sugar
is scant. The university reports that rats that ate HFCS gained significantly more weight than those that ate table sugar,
even when their overall caloric intake was the same. The fact that the results of this study may be based on inconclusive
results and thus not really offer convincing evidence, as NYU nutrition expert and no fan of HFCS Marion Nestle, points out,
will likely get lost in the shuffle.
If only the Corn Refiners Association
had changed the name of their beleaguered product, things might have worked out differently. Despite its name, high fructose
corn syrup is only marginally higher in fructose, which has been clearly linked to obesity and metabolic syndrome, than regular
sugar. (The fructose however is not chemically bonded to glucose as it is in sugar and thus more freely available to the body,
so that could actually make a difference, though it’s never been proven).
But
when you’re trying to tell people that your product doesn’t have a lot of fructose, but it’s called high
fructose corn syrup, it’s a bit like naming your new butter alternative Extra Trans Fat Margarine. No one’s going
to buy it.

1. Borrow, Trade, or Buy Used
The greenest thing you can do is to not buy new at all. Use our resources for inspiration on how barter or cooperate
for just about anything: books, movies, clothing, food, home repairs, and more.
When you plant your own garden
you can ensure that your food is organic and healthy, and since there is no transportation involved, there are no climate
change emissions. A National Gardening Association study found that the average family spends $70 a year on maintaining a
vegetable garden, and grows $600 worth of harvest.
Switch your lighbulbs,
fire your clothes dryer, unplug small appliances that draw electricity even when they're turned off. There are many strategies
for pursuing energy efficiency, which reduces the amount of power you'll need to produce to go all the way, with wind

If only 1 percent of car
owners in the US did not drive for one day a week, we would save an estimated 42 million gallons of gas per year, and keep

Instead of heading to the mall
for new clothes, you can buy stylish clothing at thrift and resale shops, or purchase new clothes that are sweatshop-free,

6. Buy Organic and Fair Trade Personal Care Products
Make-up and body-care products
have been linked to allergic reactions, birth defects, even cancer. Many products contain oils and extracts that are harvested
and produced in a way that harms the environment and exploits workers. Look for organic and Fair Trade products instead.
Household cleaners, paints and
stains, furniture, carpets, and many other items contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have been linked to cancer,
endocrine disruption, and eye irritants. Instead, make your own cleaners from safe, household ingredients, or purchase greener
cleaning products.
Spending money at locally owned businesses keeps more money in your community,
with some research demonstrating more than three times as much money staying the community -- and a growing number of local

You can
invest in socially responsible mutual funds that earn competitive returns and promote corporate responsibility. You can also
